What Defines an “Artist”?
Merriam-Webster defines an artist as being “a person who creates art (such as painting, sculpture, music, or writing) using conscious skill and creative imagination.” This is where many people get stuck, and do not believe they are an artist, or even creative if they’re not represented in a museum, alongside the Van Goh’s of the world. The most important part of the definition is “using a conscious skill and creative imagination.”
Remember that meal you cooked last night? Or, the little electronic black mirror that is now lit up, displaying these words for you to read? These words themselves! All of these were consciously created, by someone, by an artist, for you to use and consume as we speak.
With all this being said, whether you are striving to be the next Van Goh, or simply trying to impress yourself by not overcooking your chicken because you looked at your little electronic black mirror for 20 seconds too long, everyone can be, and, truthfully is, an artist! (You would be considered a Culinary artist, if you’re in the chicken game!)
